Pakistan Thar Coalfield Coal-fired Power Plant Project was officially put into commercial operation

The coal-fired power station project in the Thar Coalfield Block I Coal-Electricity Integration Project in Pakistan under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was officially put into commercial operation on February 5, 2023.

The coal-power integration project is located in the desert area in the southeast of Sindh Province, Pakistan, close to the Indo-Pakistan border. It is said to have a total cost of 3.2 billion US dollars. It is a key energy cooperation project under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and is independently developed, constructed and operated by Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. The project was commenced in 2019. The construction content includes an open-pit coal mine with an annual output of 7.8 million tons of lignite and a coal-fired power station with two 660 megawatt high parameter supercritical thermal power generation units.

Thar Block I is located in the south of Thar Coalfield in Thar Desert, Sindh Province, Pakistan, about 380 kilometers east of Karachi, covering an area of about 122 square kilometers. Thar Coalfield covers an area of about 9000 square kilometers and has more than 175 billion tons of lignite resources. It borders the Pakistan-India border in the north, east and south, and is the largest coal field in Asia. At present, Thar Coalfield is developed and constructed in 13 blocks, while the minable coal resources of Thar No.1 Mine are estimated to be 3.8 billion tons.

Thar Block I coal-electricity integration project is one of the projects in Pakistan that use local coal to generate electricity. It is of great significance to improve the level of energy security, optimize the cost of electricity, save foreign exchange reserves, etc., and has received high attention from all walks of life in Pakistan. Meng Donghai, the head of the coal-electricity integration project, said that the main equipment and main auxiliary equipment used in the coal-fired power station project put into commercial operation, such as power station boilers, steam turbine units and generators, were produced and manufactured by Shanghai Electric.

The Thar 1 coal-electricity integration construction project is an important project under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The smooth operation of the project will further expand the scope of cooperation in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and deepen the economic ties between China and Pakistan. The construction of the project will also provide about 2000 jobs for Pakistan, which is of great significance for improving the quality of life and employment of the Pakistani people and promoting the high-quality development of the Pakistani economy. After the project is put into operation, it is estimated that it can provide about 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to Pakistan’s National Grid every year, meet the demand of nearly 4 million households in the local area, and help the country reduce energy costs, improve energy structure, and enhance energy security. At the same time, the smooth implementation of the project can enable Chinese enterprises to further realize “going global” and effectively expand China’s international influence. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project is a win-win cooperation.
